Who we are

These terms apply to using KNIKO and to buying in its shop.

Using KNIKO

KNIKO is free and needs no account. It finds real words in other languages whose parts say something unexpectedly literal, and draws that literal reading. It is made for curiosity and fun; it is not a dictionary or a translation service.

We check the language facts carefully, but they can still contain mistakes. The pictures are made by an AI image model (Google Gemini, through OpenRouter). They can be inaccurate, strange or unintentionally offensive, and any resemblance to real people or existing works is unintended. If a picture or a word is wrong or offensive, or infringes your rights, tell us at [email protected] and we will review it promptly.

Please do not scrape the site, send automated or bulk requests, try to get around the limits on new pictures, or interfere with how KNIKO works. We may decline to make, show or keep any picture or word, block access we reasonably believe is abusive, and change or end the service at any time.

What you may do with the pictures

The pictures KNIKO makes are licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International (CC BY-NC 4.0): https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/. You may share and adapt them for non-commercial purposes, as long as you credit "KNIKO (kniko.io)" and indicate if you changed them.

The shareable plates that show a picture with its word are licensed under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/. You may share them unchanged, for non-commercial purposes, with credit.

The pictures are made with AI. In some countries such pictures may not be protected by copyright at all; the licences cover only the rights we hold. We do not guarantee that a picture is free of other people's rights, such as trademarks, likenesses or similarity to existing works. We may stop offering any picture at any time; that does not end licences already granted.

The licences do not allow commercial use, including selling prints, clothing or other products with the pictures on them, and give no right to use the KNIKO name or logo. The language facts themselves (that a word exists and what its parts mean) belong to no one. KNIKO's texts, its compiled word data (protected as a database), its design, and the KNIKO name and logo are not licensed and remain all rights reserved, except as included in a plate under the licence above.

Buying in the shop

The seller is Makuxi. Products are printed to order and shipped by our production partner, Printful. We deliver to the countries offered at checkout, all within the European Union.

To order, choose a colour and size and continue to checkout. In the payment step you can review and correct your details before you pay. The contract can be concluded in English, Dutch, German or Italian. Your order is accepted when your payment is confirmed. We do not keep a separate copy of the contract for you, so please save or print these terms; the version that applies is the one published when you ordered.

Prices are in euros and are final: they include all taxes due and delivery. The estimated delivery time is shown before you pay. Payment is handled by Stripe.

The risk of loss passes to you when the product is delivered to you; a parcel lost in transit is replaced or refunded. If we cannot deliver within 30 days, or at all, we tell you and you may cancel for a full refund.

Your 14-day right of withdrawal

If you are a consumer, you may withdraw from your purchase within 14 days of the day you, or someone you name other than the carrier, receive the product, or the last product if an order arrives in parts, without giving a reason. Tell us clearly by email at [email protected] or by post; you may use the model form below, but you do not have to. Sending your notice before the period ends is enough.

Send the product back to our returns address (Via Nazario Sauro 24F, 40121 Bologna (BO), Italy) within 14 days of telling us. You pay the cost of returning it; for a standard parcel within the EU this is typically €5 to €15. We refund everything you paid, including the original delivery cost, within 14 days of receiving your withdrawal, using the same payment method and without any fee. We may wait to refund until we have the product back or you show proof that you sent it, whichever is earlier. You are responsible for any loss in value caused by handling the product beyond what is needed to check it.

Misprints, damage and defects

If a product arrives misprinted, damaged or defective, email [email protected] with your order number and a photo, preferably within 30 days. We replace it or refund it at no cost to you. This does not limit your legal rights: under EU law you are entitled to products that conform to the contract for at least two years after delivery.

For any other complaint, write to [email protected]. We aim to answer within 14 days. If we cannot resolve a complaint together, you may take it to the competent court; we do not take part in proceedings before a consumer dispute board.

Liability

For products you buy, your statutory rights apply in full. The free website is offered as it is: we are not liable for damage caused by relying on KNIKO's language information or pictures, except for intent or gross negligence. Nothing in these terms limits liability for death or personal injury, product liability, or any consumer right that cannot be limited.

Applicable law

These terms are governed by Dutch law. If you are a consumer, you also keep the protection of the mandatory consumer law of the country where you live, and you may bring a dispute before the courts there. We can bring proceedings against you only in the courts of the country where you live.

These terms may change. The version that applies to a purchase is the one published when you ordered.
